Join us this summer for a sustainability and cultural heritage study tour of China!

This year the Global Leaders of Fairfax County Program will collaborate with the China Folk House Retreat to pioneer a student trip to Southwest China focused on craft, cultural heritage, architecture, and community sustainability.

Participants will arrive in China through Beijing, where they will study architecture and sustainability (3 days); travel to Chengdu, Sichuan, as guest of Southwest Jiaotong University, where they will study language and craft (7 days); travel to Dali, Yunnan, for touring (2 days); and conclude in Hong Kong (2 days). An optional trip extension will include participation in craft apprenticeships in the region between Dali and Lijiang, Yunnan.

The program cost (not inclusive of airfare) will be less than $5,000 for the full 26-day program and prorated for the 17-day program. We will work with a consolidator to obtain the best possible price on roundtrip flights and to handle visa applications.

This trip will be coordinated in partnership with the China Folk House Retreat and Southwest Jiaotong University in Chengdu, which will serve as the official host in China.

The trip will be co-led by:
  • Ryan McElveen, Managing Director, Global Leaders of Fairfax County
  • Dr. John Flower, Director, Sidwell Friends School Chinese Studies Program and former associate professor of East Asian History at the University of North Carolina
  • Dr. Pamela Leonard, CEO, China Folk House Retreat
